God of War Trilogy Remake Announced as Sony Shadow Drops ‘God of War Sons of Sparta’ at State of Play

KEY POINT

  • Sony confirmed development of a God of War Trilogy Remake, currently in early stages with no release date announced.
  • Indie developer Mega Cat Studios launched God of War Sons of Sparta as a surprise same day release.
  • The announcements signal Sony’s continued investment in the God of War franchise as it approaches its twenty fifth anniversary cycle.

Sony Interactive Entertainment concluded its latest State of Play presentation by announcing a God of War Trilogy Remake and unexpectedly launching a side scrolling spin off, God of War Sons of Sparta, available immediately on PlayStation platforms.

The announcement, made during the global livestream event, also featured the return of original Kratos voice actor TC Carson, who confirmed his involvement in both projects.

The dual reveal marks one of Sony’s most consequential franchise moves since the 2018 reboot of God of War, which shifted the series from Greek mythology to Norse settings and redefined its cinematic style.

By revisiting the original Greek era trilogy while simultaneously expanding the universe through a retro inspired spin off, Sony is reinforcing one of its most commercially and culturally significant intellectual properties.

Sony did not provide a development timeline for the God of War Trilogy Remake, describing the project as being in its “early stages.” The presentation showed only logo treatments rather than gameplay footage or technical demonstrations.

The original God of War launched in 2005 for PlayStation 2, followed by God of War II in 2007 and God of War III in 2010 for PlayStation 3. Developed by Santa Monica Studio, the trilogy established Kratos as one of gaming’s most recognizable characters and helped define cinematic action adventure design in the mid 2000s.

The franchise has since sold more than 66 million units globally across all installments, according to Sony Interactive Entertainment’s previously published figures.

The 2018 reboot and its sequel, God of War Ragnarök released in 2022, earned critical acclaim and multiple industry awards, including The Game Awards’ top honors.

The newly announced God of War Sons of Sparta represents a stylistic departure. Developed by California based Mega Cat Studios, known for retro inspired titles, the game adopts a side scrolling format reminiscent of early 2D action platformers.

Sony described it as a “passion project,” suggesting a smaller development scope compared to mainline entries.

The return of TC Carson, who voiced Kratos in the original trilogy, signals an intentional bridge to the franchise’s early identity. Carson had not voiced the character in the Norse era games, where Christopher Judge took over the role.

Industry analysts say the move reflects a broader trend in the gaming sector toward leveraging legacy intellectual property while managing rising development costs.

“AAA development timelines now routinely stretch beyond five years,” said Mat Piscatella, executive director and video game industry analyst at Circana.

“Remakes allow publishers to monetize established brands while mitigating some financial risk compared to entirely new properties.”

Piscatella added that nostalgia driven releases have demonstrated strong commercial performance, citing recent remakes across the industry that exceeded initial sales projections.

Christopher Dring, head of GamesIndustry.biz, said the simultaneous launch of a smaller spin off provides strategic diversification.

“A side-scrolling project like God of War Sons of Sparta can reach different audience segments,” Dring said. “It appeals to long-time fans while attracting players who prefer shorter, mechanically focused experiences.”

Dring noted that shadow drops, where games launch immediately after announcement, are increasingly used to generate social media momentum and avoid prolonged marketing cycles.

Fans reacted quickly across social media platforms following the announcement, with many highlighting the significance of revisiting Kratos’ Greek saga.

“It feels like Sony is acknowledging the full history of the franchise,” said Daniel Ahmad, director of research and insights at Niko Partners. “The Greek era games laid the foundation for everything that followed.”

Mega Cat Studios co founder James Deighan said in a prepared statement that the team aimed to capture the intensity of early action platformers while respecting the established lore. “We wanted to deliver a focused experience that celebrates Kratos’ origins,” Deighan said.

TC Carson, speaking during the State of Play broadcast, described returning to the role as “a powerful full circle moment,” according to Sony’s livestream transcript.

Sony did not confirm whether the God of War Trilogy Remake will release exclusively on PlayStation 5 or also on PC, a platform where recent Sony titles have appeared.

The company also did not specify whether the remake will involve rebuilt assets, updated combat systems, or narrative adjustments.

Industry observers note that early stage announcements often signal multi year development cycles, particularly for large scale remakes requiring modernized graphics engines and performance optimization.

Meanwhile, God of War Sons of Sparta is available immediately, providing Sony with near term engagement as anticipation builds around the remake.

The announcement of the God of War Trilogy Remake alongside the surprise launch of God of War Sons of Sparta underscores Sony’s continued reliance on established franchises amid shifting market dynamics.

By revisiting Kratos’ Greek era origins while experimenting with retro inspired design, Sony is expanding the reach of one of its flagship properties without detailing a definitive timeline for its next major release.
