LOS ANGELES — The FBI served search warrants Wednesday at the headquarters of the Los Angeles Unified School District and at the home of Superintendent Alberto Carvalho, according to a person familiar with the matter who was not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly.
Federal officials in Los Angeles executed the warrants as part of an ongoing investigation. The nature of the inquiry and any specific allegations under review were not immediately disclosed.
The person familiar with the investigation spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not permitted to discuss details of the probe.
The district and Carvalho’s office did not immediately respond to emails and voicemail messages seeking comment.
The execution of FBI search warrants at LAUSD places one of the nation’s largest public education systems under federal scrutiny, raising questions about governance, oversight and operational stability in a district that spans more than two dozen cities across Los Angeles County.

The Los Angeles Unified School District operates more than one thousand schools and manages a multibillion-dollar annual budget. In recent years, the district has faced significant challenges, including pandemic related learning loss, labor negotiations and oversight of federal relief funding.
Like other large urban districts, LAUSD received substantial federal pandemic relief funds through the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief program. Those funds were intended to support learning recovery, facility upgrades and student mental health services.
Federal oversight of public education funding has increased in recent years, particularly in districts managing large allocations.Carvalho’s tenure has included efforts to expand academic programs, increase graduation rates and stabilize enrollment.
Public records show that the district has also faced scrutiny over contracting processes and procurement practices in past administrations, though it was not immediately clear whether Wednesday’s FBI search warrants at LAUSD were connected to financial matters, governance issues or another area.

Joshua Dunn, executive director of the Institute of American Civics at the University of Tennessee, said federal investigations into school districts can stem from a range of issues, including procurement practices or civil rights compliance.
“In large districts managing billions of dollars, federal oversight mechanisms are significant,” Dunn said. “Search warrants are investigative tools. They do not imply guilt, but they do signal that federal authorities believe evidence relevant to a potential violation may exist.”
Marguerite Roza, director of the Edunomics Lab at Georgetown University, said governance challenges in large urban districts often intersect with financial complexity.
“When districts experience enrollment decline while still managing pandemic recovery funds, the financial systems become more complicated,” Roza said.
“Transparency and compliance requirements are heightened in that environment.”
Neither expert indicated knowledge of the specific investigation involving LAUSD.
Maria Gonzalez, a parent of two LAUSD students in East Los Angeles, said the news created uncertainty among families.
“Parents just want stability,” Gonzalez said. “We’ve already gone through COVID disruptions and strikes. We hope this doesn’t affect classrooms.”
A district administrator who declined to be named because they were not authorized to speak publicly said operations at schools continued as scheduled Wednesday.
“Schools are open, classes are running and daily operations are moving forward,” the administrator said.
The FBI’s Los Angeles field office declined to comment beyond confirming law enforcement activity. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California did not immediately respond to requests for additional information.
The next steps in the FBI search warrants at LAUSD investigation will likely depend on evidence gathered during the searches. Federal authorities could seek additional warrants, conduct interviews or present findings to a grand jury.
If charges are filed, they would be announced publicly by the US Attorney’s Office. In the absence of charges, investigations can remain ongoing for months or longer.
School district governance experts note that interim leadership plans are typically established in large districts to ensure continuity in case of administrative disruption.
