Dominiq Ponder, 23, a Colorado Buffaloes quarterback, died in a single vehicle crash early Sunday morning.
The Colorado State Patrol reported that Ponder lost control of his Tesla Model 3, struck a guardrail and an electrical pole before the vehicle caught fire.
Coach Deion Sanders acknowledged Ponder’s passing, describing him as a respected leader and urging prayers for his family and teammates.
BOULDER, Colo. — University of Colorado quarterback Dominiq Ponder, 23, died early Sunday when the vehicle he was driving went off the road in Boulder County, authorities said.
According to the Colorado State Patrol, Ponder was driving a 2023 Tesla Model 3 westbound on Baseline Road around 3 a.m. when he lost control on a right hand curve.
The car crossed into the eastbound lane, hit a guardrail and struck an electrical pole before rolling down an embankment and catching fire. Ponder was pronounced dead at the scene.
Head coach Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders confirmed Ponder’s death in a social media post, calling him “loved, respected and a born leader” and asking the community to support the player’s family and friends. Authorities said the crash is under investigation, but speed may have contributed.
The death of Ponder, a promising young athlete, shocked the University of Colorado community and the college football world. The accident occurred just as the team was preparing for spring practice, making the loss especially poignant for teammates and staff.
Ponder, originally from Opa Locka, Florida, joined the Colorado Buffaloes in 2024 after transferring from another program. He appeared in games during the 2025 season, providing depth at the quarterback position.
Coach Sanders, a Pro Football Hall of Famer, has been working to rebuild Colorado’s football program since taking over in 2023, emphasizing both on field performance and player development.
Baseline Road, where the crash occurred, has a history of sharp curves that can be hazardous at high speeds, particularly at night, according to local traffic reports.
Traffic safety experts note that single vehicle crashes remain a leading cause of death for young adults in the US “Nighttime accidents on curved roads can become deadly in seconds,” said Dr. Emily Roberts, a transportation safety researcher at the University of Colorado. “Vehicle dynamics, speed, and driver reaction all play a role in preventing or contributing to a crash.”
Lt. Colin Rose of the Colorado State Patrol said investigators are reviewing the crash scene, vehicle data, and environmental conditions to determine the precise cause. Early indications suggest speed may have been a factor.
Coach Sanders wrote, “God please comfort the Ponder family, friends & loved ones. Dom was one of my favorites! He was loved, respected & a born leader,” highlighting the emotional impact of the loss.
Teammates expressed grief on social media. Colton Allen, a Buffaloes player, wrote: “Dom was not just a teammate; he was family. His energy and leadership will be missed every day.”
Local residents noted that Baseline Road has long been considered a challenging route due to its curves and limited street lighting, which may have contributed to the accident.
The University of Colorado plans to provide counseling and support services for players and staff affected by the tragedy. The Colorado State Patrol continues its investigation, which may take weeks to complete.
Findings from the investigation will determine if road conditions, vehicle factors, or other circumstances contributed to the crash.
The death of Dominiq Ponder is a significant loss to the University of Colorado community and college football. While investigations continue, the incident underscores the importance of roadway safety and support for young athletes navigating both academic and athletic pressures.
