Matthew Perry’s Mother Honors His Birthday With Heartfelt Tribute

KEY POINT

Suzanne Morrison marked Matthew Perry’s 57th birthday with a personal tribute shared by the Matthew Perry House.

She recalled the years her son struggled with addiction, including periods when he concealed it from those around him.

Morrison said Perry wanted to help people facing addiction and urged others to continue that work in his memory.

On Aug. 19, the Matthew Perry House shared a message from Suzanne Morrison honoring her son on his birthday. The nonprofit accompanied the tribute with an old family photograph showing Morrison feeding Perry as a baby.

Morrison reflected on the passage of time and the lasting impact of Perry’s struggles with addiction. She described her son as “sweet, loving, funny, cantankerous” and acknowledged that his battle with addiction included periods when he kept it hidden from both the public and his mother.

The tribute also focused on Perry’s determination to recover. Morrison wrote that he wanted deeply to be well, placing his personal struggle alongside his wish to support others experiencing addiction.

Perry, best known for playing Chandler Bing on Friends, died on Oct. 28, 2023, at age 54. His mother’s latest tribute centers not only on remembering him but also on the purpose he associated with his own experience of addiction.

Morrison said she continues to miss her son every day. She also recalled hearing Perry express a desire in the final days of his life to help people who were struggling with addiction.

Although Perry can no longer carry out that goal himself, Morrison said others can continue the effort with support from the community.

The birthday tribute connects Perry’s personal legacy with addiction support, showing how his family views his experiences as part of a broader effort to help people facing similar struggles.

Perry’s career made him internationally recognized, but Morrison’s birthday message highlights a different part of his legacy: his stated desire to help people dealing with addiction. The tribute places that goal at the center of how his mother remembers him.

Morrison’s tribute was shared by the Matthew Perry House on Aug. 19. In her message, she said Perry wanted to help people who were “stuck in the disease of addiction” and called on others to help continue that work.
