O’Flynn accepted the award to a strong reception at the ceremony, thanking the cast and crew behind the series as well as creator Katie Dippold. She also credited Apple TV for backing the show and described Patricia as a character she was grateful to portray.
The British actor ended her speech with a message directed at viewers who connected with the character: “This is for all the Patricias out there!” Her win came in a competitive category featuring performers from several major comedy series.
O’Flynn prevailed over fellow “Widow’s Bay” nominee Dale Dickey, along with Hannah Einbinder and Meg Stalter from “Hacks,” Janelle James from “Abbott Elementary,” Michelle Pfeiffer from “Margo’s Got Money Troubles” and Jessica Williams from “Shrinking.”
In “Widow’s Bay,” O’Flynn plays Patricia, the socially awkward chief assistant to Mayor Tom Loftis, portrayed by Matthew Rhys. The series is set on a remote New England island where Loftis attempts to revive the local economy by developing tourism despite long-standing warnings that the community is cursed.
As strange and supernatural incidents escalate, Patricia becomes an important ally in Loftis’ efforts to understand the unusual events unfolding around them. Her performance became one of the first season’s notable acting highlights.
“Widow’s Bay” entered its first Emmy season with 19 nominations, including outstanding comedy series and acting recognition for Rhys, O’Flynn, Dickey and Stephen Root.
The show had already built momentum before the main ceremony, collecting eight awards at earlier Emmy presentations. Among those victories was a guest actress award for Betty Gilpin.
For O’Flynn, the supporting-actress win represents a major awards milestone after years of work across British stage and screen. She had not previously received an Emmy nomination, making the victory her first recognition from the Television Academy.
O’Flynn’s victory gives “Widow’s Bay” another major acting honor during its breakout Emmy campaign. Her award also recognizes a performance at the center of one of the series’ key characters, Patricia, whose role develops alongside the show’s increasingly supernatural story.
