Travis Kelce to Miss 2026 VMAs as Taylor Swift Takes Center Stage

KEY POINT

  • Kelce will play for the Kansas City Chiefs against the Miami Dolphins instead of attending the VMAs in Los Angeles.
  • Taylor Swift is set to receive the inaugural Artist Director Honors and premiere her “Patient Zero” music video.
  • Swift has nine nominations at the 2026 ceremony, while Madonna leads all nominees with 11.

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end is scheduled to play at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla., on the same day the VMAs take place at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. That scheduling conflict means Kelce will not be beside Swift at the awards ceremony.

Swift has not publicly confirmed whether she will attend the event herself. Her planned involvement remains significant, however, with the pop star scheduled to receive the first ever Artist Director Honors.

According to the event announcement, the new honor recognizes music artists whose work behind the camera has expanded the creative possibilities of music videos and contributed to visual storytelling. The award places Swift’s directing work among the central elements of this year’s ceremony.

The singer is also scheduled to premiere the official music video for her new song “Patient Zero” during the broadcast. Alongside the premiere and new honor, Swift enters the ceremony with nine nominations across categories including video and artist of the year, best pop, direction, art direction, cinematography, editing, choreography and visual effects.

Swift and Kelce first met in 2023 before announcing their engagement in August 2025. The couple married at Madison Square Garden in New York City on July 3, according to the supplied report.

People recently reported that the couple are settling into married life and feel grateful about entering a new stage together. An unnamed source described their relationship as feeling even more special after becoming husband and wife.

The 2026 VMAs will be hosted by Snoop Dogg and will feature a major lineup of nominees and performers. Madonna leads the nominations with 11, followed by Swift with nine, while Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter each have seven.

Nirvana is set to receive the Video Vanguard Award. Madonna will also open the ceremony with her first live VMAs performance in 23 years, while Lisa, RAYE, Sienna Spiro, Shaboozey, GENER8ION, Gunna and Yung Lean are among the announced performers.

The 2026 VMAs are scheduled to air on CBS, simulcast on MTV and stream on Paramount+ on Sunday, Sept. 27. Swift’s “Patient Zero” video premiere and the presentation of the new Artist Director Honors are among the night’s confirmed highlights.
