TUCSON, Ariz. — Arizona law enforcement is intensifying the investigation into the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, 84, mother of “Today” show co anchor Savannah Guthrie, after TMZ reported receiving an alleged ransom note demanding millions in Bitcoin. Authorities say the tip is being treated as a serious lead while the FBI assists in the case.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday that investigators are aware of “possible ransom note(s)” connected to the ongoing search and are reviewing all information carefully.
Sheriff Chris Nanos described the situation as urgent, noting that Guthrie relies on medication that must be taken daily to prevent life threatening complications.

TMZ reported receiving an email on Tuesday morning claiming to be a ransom demand for Guthrie. The message included a specific Bitcoin address for payment and referenced personal details, including clothing Guthrie wore and items at her Tucson-area residence. Officials have not verified the note’s authenticity or confirmed it originated from her abductor.
Sheriff Nanos said all tips, including the TMZ report, are being forwarded immediately to detectives coordinating with the FBI Tucson Field Office. He emphasized that authorities are examining every lead thoroughly.
Guthrie’s home in the Catalina Foothills has been secured as a crime scene. Authorities are collecting DNA samples and reviewing signs of forced entry or tampering.
According to Nanos, Guthrie did not leave voluntarily, leaving behind her phone, wallet, vehicle, and essential medication.
Jon Edwards, assistant special agent with the FBI, confirmed federal agents are analyzing cell tower records, digital communications, and surveillance footage to identify possible suspects or vehicles connected to the disappearance.
Savannah Guthrie released a statement urging the public to pray for her mother’s safe return.
She described Nancy Guthrie as a woman of “deep conviction” and a “good and faithful servant” and called for collective hope and support.
Authorities are asking anyone with information or local surveillance footage from the Tucson area to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Office or the FBI tip line at 1‑800 CALL FBI.
Retired FBI agent Nicole Parker said the case is unusual due to Guthrie’s age and reliance on daily medication. Parker noted that ransom communications sent to media outlets are rare, as kidnappers typically negotiate directly with families to avoid exposure that could compromise their plans.
Criminologists stress that investigators in such cases focus on digital footprints, cryptocurrency tracking, and local surveillance as essential investigative tools.
Authorities plan to release updates as the investigation evolves. DNA results and digital evidence analysis may take several days. Law enforcement stresses the importance of timely public tips in aiding Guthrie’s safe recovery.
