DALLAS/WASHINGTON, Feb. 5, 2026 — The Dallas Mavericks and Washington Wizards completed a major National Basketball Association trade Wednesday, sending star big man Anthony Davis from Dallas to Washington in a multi-player and draft pick exchange that reshapes both franchises’ rosters.

According to ESPN reporter Shams Charania, the Mavericks will receive forward Khris Middleton, guards AJ Johnson and Malaki Branham, center Marvin Bagley III, and five future draft picks in return, including the 2026 Oklahoma City Thunder first round pick and the 2030 Golden State Warriors first round pick with protections. Washington will acquire Davis along with guards Jaden Hardy, D’Angelo Russell, and Dante Exum.
The trade marks one of the season’s most significant roster moves. Davis, a multiple time All Star with championship experience, struggled with injuries during his tenure in Dallas, limiting his availability. The Mavericks’ decision to move him aligns with a broader strategy of acquiring draft assets and younger players.
Washington, meanwhile, continues to rebuild its roster aggressively. By pairing Davis with Young, the Wizards aim to create a competitive core capable of contending in the Eastern Conference.
Both players are currently sidelined Davis with a hand injury and Young recovering from an earlier trade related absence but the front office expects them to return during the second half of the season.
Davis joined Dallas last season in a trade that involved multiple players and draft picks, marking a major shift for the Mavericks.
Despite his talent, his ongoing injuries and contract demands contributed to a perception that he was expendable, prompting Dallas to explore trade options.
Washington had already been active in the market, acquiring Young earlier this season, signaling a willingness to accelerate their roster development.
NBA analyst Yossi Gozlan said the Mavericks benefit financially and strategically from the trade. “Dallas clears salary cap space and gains flexibility for future acquisitions,” he said. The draft picks obtained could be key assets in a multi year rebuilding process.
Washington General Manager Michael Winger emphasized the team’s competitive goals. “Adding Anthony aligns with our plan to build a strong, experienced core around our young talent,” Winger said in a statement.
Veteran NBA agent Mark Bartelstein commented on the strategic value: “Dallas is clearly focusing on long-term flexibility and restocking assets with this trade.”
Washington assistant coach Jamal Mosley said, “Anthony brings elite defensive presence and championship experience, which will immediately impact our team’s competitiveness.”
Washington expects to integrate Davis and Young into its rotation as soon as health allows, potentially improving its standing in the Eastern Conference.
Dallas will focus on developing younger players and utilizing its new draft capital to strengthen the roster over the next several seasons.
The trade of Anthony Davis represents a transformative moment for both franchises. Washington acquires top tier talent to accelerate contention, while Dallas embraces a youth driven rebuild and strategic asset accumulation. The move will influence team dynamics, playoff prospects, and roster strategies across both conferences.
