ATLANTA — Rapper Lil Poppa, the Jacksonville, Florida based artist born Janarious Mykel Wheeler, has died at age 25, according to the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office in Georgia.

Officials confirmed Wednesday that Wheeler died in the state, though a cause of death was not immediately available.

Lil Poppa’s death came just days after the release of his newest single, “Out of Town Bae,” and months after his August album, “Almost Normal Again.”

The artist had been scheduled to perform in New Orleans next month, according to entertainment outlet TMZ.

The sudden death of Lil Poppa marks the loss of a rising voice in Southern hip-hop whose introspective lyrics and melodic delivery earned a loyal following.

Signed to Yo Gotti’s Collective Music Group, the rapper built a national audience through streaming platforms while maintaining strong ties to Jacksonville’s rap scene.

His passing underscores the volatility surrounding emerging artists navigating rapid fame, intense touring schedules and the pressures of the modern music industry.

Lil Poppa emerged in the late 2010s as part of Jacksonville’s growing hip hop movement. His breakout tracks, including “Love & War,” “Mind Over Matter” and “HAPPY TEARS,” blended street narratives with emotional vulnerability.

In August, he released “Almost Normal Again,” a 16 track project that expanded his reach beyond regional audiences. The album reflected themes of trauma, ambition and resilience, topics that have increasingly defined Florida’s contemporary rap scene.

Just 12 hours before news of his death was confirmed, Lil Poppa posted a video to his Instagram Story featuring lyrics from Rod Wave’s song “Letting It Go.”

The lyrics read, “You know what happened / I know what happened / world never will,” followed by lines about seeking peace of mind.

Fans flooded the comment section of his final Instagram post, which promoted the “Out Of Town Bae” official video. Messages ranged from disbelief to grief, with many questioning whether the news was accurate.

Collective Music Group has not yet issued a public statement.

The death of Lil Poppa adds to a troubling pattern of young hip-hop artists dying in their twenties, raising broader questions about artist support systems, mental health access and the pressures of digital-era fame.

Dr. Marcus Collins, clinical associate professor of marketing at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business who studies music culture and fandom, said the accelerated visibility created by streaming platforms can intensify scrutiny.

“Young artists today operate in an ecosystem where their personal lives and emotional states are constantly amplified online,” Collins said. “The combination of rapid fame, financial pressure and nonstop public engagement can create significant stress.”

Erika Ramirez, founder and CEO of music platform ILYSM Media and former editorial director at Billboard Latin, said artists from regional scenes often face sudden national exposure without institutional safeguards.

“Independent or emerging artists may not have the same structural support as legacy acts,” Ramirez said. “When growth happens quickly through streaming, management and wellness resources do not always scale at the same pace.”

While no cause of death has been announced, experts note that public reaction often highlights the fragile balance between creative expression and industry demands.

Anthony “Ace” Turner, a Jacksonville based music promoter who worked with regional acts, said Lil Poppa’s music resonated locally before gaining national traction.

“He spoke about real experiences growing up in Jacksonville,” Turner said. “People connected to that honesty. You could see the growth in his crowds each year.”

Tamara Williams, a music industry attorney based in Atlanta, said contractual obligations and touring demands can intensify after an artist signs with a major-affiliated label.

“Once an artist signs to a collective or major group, there are expectations tied to releases and appearances,” Williams said. “That transition period can be especially demanding.”

Fans across social media platforms continued posting tributes Wednesday, sharing lyrics and clips from his performances.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office said further information would be released pending investigation results. In similar cases, toxicology reports can take several weeks.

Industry observers say Lil Poppa’s death may renew discussions around artist wellness resources, particularly for younger performers experiencing rapid career growth.

Concert promoters in New Orleans have not yet announced whether the scheduled performance next month will be formally canceled or converted into a tribute event.

Rapper Lil Poppa dead at 25 leaves a gap in Jacksonville’s hip-hop community and among a growing fan base that followed his rise through streaming platforms and live performances.

As authorities continue investigating the circumstances of his death, the focus remains on honoring his music and examining the broader challenges facing emerging artists in a rapidly evolving industry.

His catalog, including “Almost Normal Again” and “Out of Town Bae,” remains available on major streaming services, where listeners have returned in large numbers following confirmation of his death.
