Dave Bautista has been confirmed as the new Kratos in the upcoming God of War TV show, taking over the central role previously played by Ryan Hurst.
The former WWE star confirmed the casting himself by sharing an image of Kratos on Instagram. His announcement follows weeks of reports linking him to the character.
According to Deadline, the production will restart from scratch when filming begins later this year. This means the previously filmed material featuring Hurst will not form the basis of the new production.
The God of War franchise debuted on PlayStation 2 in 2005 and quickly became one of Sony’s most successful video game properties. Its story originally drew heavily from Greek mythology and followed Kratos through a long-running journey involving revenge and redemption.
The series later expanded its mythology. The 2018 God of War shifted the setting toward Norse mythology and introduced Atreus, Kratos’ son, as a central character.
The first official images from the television adaptation were released earlier this year and featured Hurst as Kratos alongside Atreus. With Bautista now taking over the role, the production is set to begin again with the new lead.
Amazon’s adaptation is based on the PlayStation game storyline. According to Prime Video, the series will follow Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of Kratos’ wife, providing the foundation for the television version of the story.
