Sway died at his home in Sway, according to a close friend cited by The Guardian. Born in Hornsey, north London, to Ghanaian parents, Sway developed a style that moved between grime, hip-hop and club-oriented music rather than fitting neatly into one British scene.
After beginning with Phynix Crew and One, he moved into a solo career and released several mixtapes. “Little Derek” became an early breakthrough, while later records expanded his commercial reach.
His 2011 single “Still Speedin’,” which sampled “Ride on Time” and featured Kano, became his first UK Top 20 hit. The following year, “Level Up,” produced by Flux Pavilion, went further by reaching No. 8.
Sway also worked with artists including Ed Sheeran, Riz Ahmed, Lupe Fiasco, Chamillionaire, Tinchy Stryder, Akala, Donae’o and Kaiser Chiefs.Beyond his own recordings, he helped develop younger talent through his Dcypha Productions label.
Among the artists connected to his work was KSI, with whom Sway released the 2013 track “No Sleep,” alongside Tiggs Da Author.Sway married Helen in 2013 and had four children: Jalil, AJ, Inaya and Imara. In a recent social media post, he described himself as a single father.
The MOBO Awards expressed love for Sway’s family, loved ones and fans, while Kream publicly shared his grief. The Guardian also reported that tributes came from fellow British artists, including Giggs.
Sway’s career left a documented mark on British rap through independent success, major collaborations and his role in developing emerging artists.
