Lena Dunham Welcomes First Child With Husband Luis Felber

KEY POINT

  • Lena Dunham, 40, and Luis Felber, 40, are now parents to their first child, a daughter.
  • The couple welcomed their baby through surrogacy and shared the news in an essay for Vogue.
  • Dunham previously underwent a hysterectomy after years of severe pain linked to endometriosis.

Dunham announced the arrival of her daughter through a Vogue op-ed, describing the period when the baby was developing in their surrogate as a gradual realization that their long-awaited family was becoming tangible.

The arrival follows a complicated path to parenthood for the actress, writer and creator of Girls. Dunham has publicly discussed her struggles with endometriosis, a condition that caused severe and persistent pain and ultimately led her to undergo a hysterectomy in 2018.

For Dunham, the surgery resolved a debilitating medical problem but also changed her expectations about becoming a mother. During an April appearance on Today with Jenna & Sheinelle, she explained that the emotional impact of the procedure became clearer after the immediate pain had subsided.

She also discussed the broader difficulties surrounding endometriosis diagnosis and treatment, saying that her experience had made her aware of how differently people can build families.

Rather than abandoning the idea of motherhood, Dunham said she eventually became comfortable with the possibility that her path would not follow the one she had originally imagined.

Dunham and Felber explored alternative ways to grow their family, including IVF and surrogacy. Earlier attempts were unsuccessful, but Dunham continued to express her desire to become a mother.

In July, she told The Times that the couple was working on expanding their family in new ways. At the time, she said she wanted to safely meet their children before deciding how publicly to discuss the process.

The couple’s daughter is now their first child together.Lena Dunham and Felber married in London in September 2021 after meeting on a blind date earlier that year. Dunham confirmed the wedding date on Instagram shortly after the ceremony.

Felber is an English-Peruvian musician, while Dunham is known for creating and starring in Girls, as well as her work as an author, director and producer. Their relationship began several years after Dunham’s previous long-term relationship with musician and producer Jack Antonoff ended in 2017.

Dunham’s own comments have emphasized gratitude rather than a single definition of how a family should be formed. In her earlier Today interview, she said meeting people who had built families in different ways helped her reach a place where she felt excited about becoming a parent.

The couple has now reached that milestone with the birth of their daughter through surrogacy, after Dunham’s years of medical treatment and changing expectations around motherhood.
