British actress Mia Goth filed a petition for dissolution of marriage from Shia LaBeouf in Los Angeles County on Tuesday, Oct. 6, according to court documents obtained by PEOPLE. Goth listed July 28, 2025, as the date of separation and cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for ending the marriage.
The filing also addresses custody and financial matters involving the couple’s daughter. Goth is seeking primary legal and physical custody of 4-year-old Isabel. The documents additionally request that the court terminate its ability to award spousal support to either Goth or LaBeouf.
The couple’s relationship has been marked by several reconciliations since they first met while working on Nymphomaniac: Vol. II in 2012. Goth made her feature film debut in the project, and the pair subsequently began an on and off romance.
Goth and LaBeouf held a wedding ceremony in Las Vegas in 2016. However, officials later said the ceremony did not result in a legally recognized marriage. The pair announced a separation in 2018 but were seen together again in 2020 wearing wedding rings. They welcomed their daughter in 2022.
Following their 2025 separation, LaBeouf moved from the Los Angeles home he had shared with Goth to New Orleans. His move came before a legal episode during Mardi Gras celebrations, when he was arrested following an alleged altercation at a bar on Feb. 17.
LaBeouf later pleaded guilty to misdemeanor battery charges connected with the incident. His sentence included two years of probation, alcohol abuse rehabilitation, sensitivity training and anger management classes.
TMZ reported that police had been called to the couple’s Los Angeles home several times before LaBeouf’s relocation. The outlet also reported that Goth wanted LaBeouf to enter rehabilitation.
PEOPLE previously described the relationship as complicated, with a source saying the pair had experienced significant drama before their separation. The source said Goth encouraged LaBeouf to move out while emphasizing her independence and focus on their daughter.
LaBeouf discussed the breakdown of his marriage in March during an appearance on Channel 5 With Andrew Callaghan. He acknowledged making serious mistakes and said he had violated Goth’s trust before they attempted to start a family.
He also said some of their problems had become impossible to resolve and that neither wanted their daughter to grow up around unhappiness. Despite the breakup, LaBeouf spoke highly of Goth, calling her an incredible woman.
Page Six reported that the pair had recently been estranged, while TMZ reported that LaBeouf has since moved on romantically with Nicole Mumphrey.
Goth’s divorce filing now places custody and spousal-support matters before the Los Angeles County court. The filing formally moves the former couple’s separation into divorce proceedings.
