KEY POINT
- Harry’s September 23 speech in New York stopped after the teleprompter malfunctioned roughly seven minutes into his remarks.
- He returned about 40 minutes later and used the disruption to make a joke about AI interrupting his speech.
- His main message focused on the growing relationship between children and artificial intelligence, including AI companion chatbots.
The Duke of Sussex was addressing the Clinton Global Initiative’s annual meeting in New York when the technical problem brought his prepared remarks to an abrupt halt.
According to The Independent, Harry had been warning that society should not wait years to understand how emerging technology could affect children. After the teleprompter stopped working, he paused, said, “And that’s it,” and left the stage.
A spokesman for Harry later confirmed that the interruption resulted from a teleprompter fault. He returned roughly 40 minutes later to complete the address.
Rather than ignoring the incident, Harry incorporated it into the second part of his speech. People reported that he joked, “AI got into my speech,” before continuing his remarks.

Harry’s Warning About AI and Children
The technical interruption came during a speech centered on a much broader concern. Harry argued that artificial intelligence could create risks different from those associated with traditional social media.
He focused particularly on AI companion chatbots and cases involving teenagers. The New York Post reported that Harry referred to allegations that some technologies had contributed to the deaths of young people who had relied on them for guidance.
Speaking from his perspective as a father, Harry said AI could become more than a tool competing for attention. He warned that increasingly persuasive systems could become something children trust, confide in and believe understands them.
Harry connected the development of AI with earlier concerns about social media and said the world should learn from the time it took to respond to online harms.
He previously addressed children’s digital safety at the Clinton Global Initiative in 2024. People reported that he and Meghan Markle had also launched The Parents’ Network through their Archewell Foundation to support families affected by serious online harms.

The New York appearance was Harry’s first public engagement in the United States since he and Meghan moved their family back to Britain in August. Despite the disruption, he completed his speech and repeated his call for earlier action to protect children as AI becomes increasingly integrated into their lives.
The teleprompter incident quickly drew criticism and mockery online, with some social-media users questioning why Harry did not continue speaking after the prepared text disappeared. Those reactions represent individual online commentary rather than an official assessment of his speech.
Harry’s appearance demonstrated that his public engagements in the United States continue despite his family’s recent move to Britain. His Clinton Global Initiative address also extended his previously stated focus on children, technology and online safety.
