KEY POINT
- Anne Carson, 76, received the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature for an influential body of work spanning poetry, prose, translation and scholarship.
- The Swedish Academy highlighted her creation of new literary forms through an unusual dialogue with classical traditions.
- Carson receives 12 million Swedish kronor after being surprised by the announcement while in Iceland.
The Swedish Academy announced Carson as this year’s literature laureate on Thursday, recognizing a career that has repeatedly challenged conventional boundaries between literary genres. Her writing has combined verse, prose, dialogue and translation rather than remaining within a single established form.
The Academy described her work as “bold and inventive,” emphasizing the way she has used classical traditions to develop new approaches to contemporary literature. Nobel committee chairman Anders Olsson said Carson had moved beyond lyrical poetry centered on the narrative self and helped inspire new literary forms.

Carson was born in Toronto and has also held Icelandic citizenship since 2022. At the time of the announcement, she was in Iceland, where she told Ingrid Carlberg, permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, that she was listening to the wind.
Carlberg said Carson was taken by surprise when she received the news by phone and was also happy. The conversation was brief because the Academy contacted her shortly before making the public announcement.
A major thread throughout Carson’s career has been her engagement with Classical Greek literature. She has translated ancient Greek works while also drawing on philology, literary criticism and poetry to create books that resist simple genre classifications.
Her notable works include The Glass Essay, Autobiography of Red: A Novel in Verse, Nox, Float and The Beauty of the Husband: A Fictional Essay in 29 Tangos. Autobiography of Red, published in 1998, is among her best-known works.
Her 2019 performance piece Norma Jeane Baker of Troy demonstrates her interest in connecting ancient and modern cultural figures. The work brings together the story of Helen of Troy from Euripides’ Helen with the life and image of Marilyn Monroe.

Carson’s Nobel recognition places a writer known for crossing poetry, fiction, translation and classical scholarship among the world’s most prominent literature laureates. The award also reflects the Swedish Academy’s stated interest in literary work that expands established forms.
The literature prize, established under Alfred Nobel’s will, has been awarded since 1901. It carries a monetary award of 12 million Swedish kronor, equivalent to about $1.2 million.
Anders Olsson praised Carson’s movement across genres and art forms, describing her writing as playful and ironic while emphasizing its connections between classical and modern poetry.
Carson had also been listed among the favorites for the prize by bookmakers Ladbrokes before the announcement.
Carson now joins the Nobel literature laureates recognized for a lifetime of literary achievement. Her selection follows Hungarian writer Laszlo Krasznahorkai, who received the 2025 Nobel Prize in Literature.
