Earl Spencer has offered a sympathetic view of Prince Harry and Meghan, describing the couple as “just regular people at heart” during a U.S. interview connected to his memoir about his late sister, Princess Diana.
Discussing Harry’s decision to move his family back to the UK from the United States, Spencer said the choice “seems normal” to him because Harry is “an English guy.” He also acknowledged that marrying into the Royal Family could be difficult, saying it was “tough” for anyone entering that environment.
Spencer’s comments come alongside discussion of his decision to publish a memoir about Diana. He said he deliberately treated the book as his own story and responsibility rather than seeking input from family members before deciding what to include.
The Earl said he did not tell Harry or his brother, Prince William, about the book until shortly before its public announcement. He explained that informing relatives earlier could have resulted in them having opinions about what should or should not appear in the memoir.
Spencer said he informed family members on the day the announcement was due to be made, giving them little advance warning. When asked about William and Harry’s reactions, he declined to reveal private conversations but said their response was “okay.”
His comments therefore cover two separate issues: his view of Harry and Meghan as ordinary people behind their public roles, and his decision to take personal responsibility for telling Diana’s story through his memoir.
