KEY POINT
- Kylie Kelce apologized after learning more about how Princess Catherine is formally addressed.
- She said she will use “Princess Catherine” or “the Princess of Wales” going forward.
- Kelce still hopes to interview the royal about motherhood, field hockey and other shared interests.
Kylie Kelce is revisiting her invitation to Princess Catherine after realizing that her choice of royal title was not considered appropriate.
During the Sept. 24 episode of her “Not Gonna Lie with Kylie Kelce” podcast, Kelce invited the Princess of Wales to join her for a conversation about field hockey and parenting. Kelce had made the invitation after Catherine was seen playing shinty during a visit to Scotland. Shinty is a sport with similarities to field hockey, a game Kelce played competitively during college.
On the Oct. 1 episode, Kelce addressed the terminology she had used and apologized directly to the royal.
“I was unaware that calling Princess Catherine, Princess Kate was offensive,” Kelce said. “I didn’t know that. Now I know that.”
She added that she wants to address people in ways that show respect and said she would use “Princess Catherine” or “the Princess of Wales” going forward.
Catherine has been publicly known as Kate Middleton since her relationship with Prince William before their 2011 wedding, and “Kate Middleton” remains widely used in coverage and online searches.
Her official royal title changed after Queen Elizabeth II died in September 2022. William became Prince of Wales after King Charles III became monarch, while Catherine became the Princess of Wales.
Kelce also acknowledged that she might need to adjust her language if Catherine ever accepts the podcast invitation. After a listener suggested that the royal would be too refined for Kelce’s usual profanity, Kelce agreed that she would need to clean up her language.
Despite her expectations being low, Kelce said she would still welcome the opportunity to speak with Catherine. She cited their shared connection to field hockey and motherhood, as well as Catherine’s public experience with cancer, as reasons she would like to have the conversation.
The potential interview would also follow a connection between the two families through podcasting. Prince William appeared on Jason Kelce and Travis Kelce’s “New Heights” podcast in July.
